The Great Patriotic War is nearing its end. Soviet troops are confidently advancing, and it seems that only a few months remain until victory. However, horrific crimes begin to occur behind the lines, casting a shadow over the general sense of elation.
A gang of criminals kills people, disappears without a trace, and leaves sketches of the victims at the crime scenes. Because of these portraits and their inexplicable cruelty, the group is dubbed the “Dead Head,” and its leader is called the Artist. The case is assigned to two officers—Major Yefimov and Captain Sazonov. As the investigation unfolds, they conclude that the apparent criminal activity is merely a cover.
