Pyotr Avdeich was a respected engineer at a provincial factory and a loving head of the family, but his honesty and straightforwardness once turned against him. For ten long years, the talented engineer was sentenced for «anti-Soviet» rhetoric. He returns an aged, tired, and lonely man whom no one is waiting for anymore. His wife died, unable to bear the separation, while the rest of the family fled, fearing that they too would soon be taken away. His grown-up granddaughter Lisa reluctantly visits her grandfather, whom she cannot forgive for the terrible label of «enemy of the people». Meanwhile, war follows in the wake of his hard-won freedom. German troops are approaching their city. The occupiers need «their own» people in the occupied territories, and the once-repressed Pyotr Avdeich seems like a suitable candidate for the role of collaborator.
