Stepan’s wife and son were killed during the German occupation, and he decides to start a new family with Julietta. After the war, the couple and their daughter Sophie arrive in Stepan’s native village and suddenly learn that his family survived. Now he has two wives and two children. Julietta does not want to build her happiness on the misfortune of others and plans to return home. But since Sophie is now a citizen of the USSR, Julietta can only leave on her own.
