The investigation into the murder of game developer Valery Lytkin, whose body was found in the forest by Olga’s fiancé, leaves even the experienced investigator Kartashova at a loss. The victim had neither enemies nor dangerous connections—only work on the ambitious project «Uninvited Guests». When all leads are exhausted, Olga joins the case. Immersing herself in the world of the deceased’s game, she makes an incredible discovery: the key characters have real-life prototypes from Lytkin’s circle. The programmer literally hid his friends and detractors on digital levels. But the real mystery lies in their speech: the characters’ dialogues are recorded as complex binary code. Kartashova and Barkovskaya must find clues and motives in the real world, as well as decipher secret messages in the virtual one.
