Russia, 1934. The famine is over, while the times of the Great Terror and the war are still ahead. The young country of the USSR is living through grand construction projects and believing in a better future. Foreign currency—gold—is needed to build enormous enterprises. To this end, Torgsins are being established across the country—«shops for trade with foreigners»—where wealthy people can purchase delicacies and luxury goods in exchange for gold jewelry. Impoverished citizens also bring in the last of their family heirlooms.
An educated young woman, Lida Sokolskaya, arrives in Moscow from Leningrad. While packing for the move, Lida finds an antique pendant among her father’s belongings. To learn its history, she takes the pendant to a Torgsin. There, she will not only meet Serebrov, the director of the Torgsin, who believes he is benefiting his homeland while being exploited by the rulers of the new life, but will also discover something incredible about herself.
