Boris, Sonya, and their son Denis live in a modest Khrushchyovka apartment in Moscow. Denis is eighteen, and his parents are unhappy that he still refuses to get his act together—he spends all day playing the guitar and writing songs. Sonya teaches Russian language and literature at school, runs a drama club, and also earns extra money as a private tutor. Meanwhile, in Vyazov lives the family of Gleb Dorokhov, who is married to Raisa—Sonya’s sister—and they have a daughter, Marina. The story begins when Marina comes to Moscow and Denis goes to Vyazov. There are many reasons for this. Marina needs to get into university, while Sonya hopes that Gleb will help her son settle down and get to work. But there is another reason behind this change, concealing an old secret that binds the two families together.
