The renowned conductor Grachev is assembling a children’s choir, which needs to recruit talented kids from ordinary schools. His assistants hold auditions, where they select a girl named Katya. She lives in an average Soviet family, but soon her mother runs away with her lover, which deeply unsettles the teenager, who has to prepare for performances. A young music teacher, Varya Volgina, starts working at the school. She sees that Yura has talent and sings very well. However, the boy lives in a poor single-parent family in a communal apartment, where singing is not considered a masculine occupation. The teenager is mocked by repeat students and other bullies. Varya understands that performing in the choir will open the way in life for the boy, so she persuades him to try becoming part of the ensemble. But is this path really so easy?
