The Series is set in Novgorod in the 1980s. The main character, Judge Irina Polyakova, takes on the case of a serial maniac at the insistence of her lover, court chairman Valery Guryanov. The defendant faces the death penalty, while the only evidence of his guilt is highly questionable. Two lay assessors are also involved in the trial: school principal Nadezhda and nurse Natasha.
