An old Russian Series telling of life in the Russian countryside in the mid-nineteenth century. The story begins in a small village peacefully situated on the banks of the turbulent Volga River. At the local fair, two old friends meet: the wealthy merchants Chapurin and Maslennikov, who have come here to sell their goods. After a successful deal, they head to an inn, where the conversation turns to their children and the need to choose advantageous matches for them. Soon, they meet another merchant who happens to have a pretty marriageable daughter. Maslennikov arranges a matchmaking, but his son refuses to take «the first girl he meets» as his wife. The situation changes when the merchant himself, captivated by her astonishing beauty, decides to marry his friend's daughter.
