The biographical Series "Yesenin" is devoted to exploring the life, work, and mysterious death of the great Russian poet Sergei Yesenin. The events of the film unfold in parallel across two time periods: the 1980s and the 1910s. Lieutenant Colonel Khlystov, an investigator with the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department, receives a posthumous photograph of Yesenin, which compels the detective to begin his own investigation into the circumstances of the poet’s death. Khlystov is convinced that Yesenin was murdered as a result of a political conspiracy and now hopes to gather the necessary evidence to support his version. A KGB general advises Khlystov not to stir up the past, as it may prove mortally dangerous, but the investigator remains adamant. The Series also depicts Yesenin’s own life, from his military service and arrival in Petrograd until his death. Yesenin meets Alexander Blok and Sergei Gorodetsky, and later even Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna herself, who gives him a watch as a gift for his heartfelt poems. Soon, Yesenin also becomes acquainted with law enforcement when he causes a disturbance in a café. Thus, the poet ends up on the Cheka’s "watch list."
